Stormy

Well, it seems that winter isn’t quite done with us here in the Southern Hemisphere!  Normally the low pressure troughs have fully moved south by now and stable warm summery weather is here to stay until March.

But not this year.

It’s been a spring of fits and starts, warm days and squalls. It’s like a misfiring car.

The weekend was warm and dry.  Today we have violent storms with howling gales and torrential rain Read More

Riding around

I decided to take the bike out on a gratuitous run around yesterday.  It’s been ages since I’ve just walked or driven about with the camera on my own for the sake of it.  In fact, the last time might have been when I went to Brisbane with work.  Crap, huh?

So this post is kinda dedicated to a fellow blogger – a veritable Arkansas Traveller – Jeffrey, who takes pictures and blogs about rural Arkansas as he cycles about.  I totally love that – it’s just about getting out there.  Go find him here

It was a really hot day – into the 30’s before lunch, but there was a storm front coming down from the north, bringing cloud and interesting skies.

So around 5pm I jumped on the bike, put the trusty little LX5 in my pocket and headed out to take some shots from the coast.  Areas I have plenty of pictures of already – mostly way better ones than I could hope to get with just the pocket camera, but I don’t care – it was just nice to get out and get some air.  Plus I got to ride the bike, which still makes me feel like a spitfire pilot. Back to England – part 5

It was scheduled to rain for the next couple of days, but it wasn’t supposed to hit until much later in the day, so my sister and I took the chance to head down to the beach.  It’s an hour’s drive to Camber Sands but the traffic wasn’t too bad and the sun was shining.  We decided to leave early and be packed up by lunch ahead of the rain and the rush (this place gets so busy once the sun is out)

We arrived just after 9 and the place was almost deserted.  Awesome.  Buckets and spades purchased, we walked off up the beach and set up our untidy little camp.  As soon as we put the bags down, the kids were off.

busy weekends

Its not been a very good few months for weekends – there’s been so much to do I feel like I’m going back to work on Mondays for a rest!  What with all the clearing up of the storm damage, fixing my roof and getting the back garden ready for the new fence. Then the whole family was sick and blah blah, I felt like I’d not had a proper break in ages!

Raising Hell

We’ve had a few storms here over the last few weeks.  Big arsed hairy Indian Ocean winter storms.

These are usually ok – the wind howls, the rain falls and then its gone.  Except this time we had 2 of them back to back, the first with a sudden howling gale that knocked down fences and trees and damaged the roof and the second, a few days later, bringing 12 hours of violent wind and torrential rain.  This, as you can imagine did not go well with the already damaged roof, and water came pouring in through one ceiling over of the windows in the back of the house.  Bah!

last pics of 2011

First up – I want to wish everyone who comes to this blog my very best for 2012! May it be amazing for all of you.

Ok – here’s the last of the photos from 2011!

The girls wanted to try out their new boogie boards and as the wind was blowing pretty strongly, the ocean was likely to have a few good small children friendly sized waves.

So I packed up my camera and a beach chair and took them down for a few hours.

The tale of the kite and the moon

It’s been a while since I went down to Safety Bay and took some shots of the kite surfers – winter isn’t the best time for them to be out (we only get that reliable sea breeze once the daytime temperatures start to hit the high 20’s) and I’ve been busy with other stuff.

I had some time yesterday whilst Jay was doing some study for her degree so I popped down camera in hand to see who was about

Photo Sunday

It’s been too long since I went for a meander with the camera.  I wanted to take some kite surf shots today – it was supposed to be windy with storm, but as it turned out, it was only windy for a few hours and then nothing.

Still as a still thing playing sleeping lions.

And then it got really overcast too.

I really thought I’d blown it and wasn’t going to get to go out at all.

Well, the rain and storms held off a few km out to sea and the sun kept finding a way through.  In fact, the dark/light combination was kind of interesting.

moody and dark

Sunsets.  They’re always good for the soul.

It’s good to gave a colourful close to a day – it’s as if nature is finishing the day with a poetic full stop.

Well, thats all fine and dandy, but the internet (and indeed my own photo collection) is full of shots of sunsets.  They happen every day in millions of different places around the world – they’re almost as common as a Ford Fiesta.

So I decided to do something different Read More

Photo Sunday

It’s been a shocker, weather wise, over the last three of four days.  A massive winter storm system has swept in off the Indian Ocean unleashing torrential rain and howling gales (upto 130kmh winds) that have relentlessly battered the Perth coast, with Rockingham copping some of the worst of it.

The bad weather means I’ve not been able to get out to get any air or take any photos.
