Bits and Bobs

Merry Christmas, dear readers!

So – I’m taking some time out chilling after a lovely morning and lunch with the family on this perfect Perth Christmas summer day.

Being born in the northern hemisphere, Christmas in summer will always feel wrong, despite it being an almost perfect day – clear blue skies, 30 degrees and light breeze.

That said – I did get up early and go for a run to take full advantage of what we have here.  Read More

Shack

Ages ago, I started a project to take photos of all the old houses in the area with my Holga medium format camera.

Well, I only got so far and lost interest, but I was going through my photos and discovered I’d taken a  load with the regular digital camera.

So with a little nip and tuck in Lightroom, I kinda massaged them into a similar feel of image to finish the project – at least as finished as it was going to get. Read More

Walking before you run

So, regular readers (what I have left, given the infrequency of my posts!) will remember that since March I’ve been on a bit of a health kick.

Its been going really well – consistency, not overdoing it or expecting some magical body transformation and falling in a heap and finding solitude in 13 tubs of Ben and Jerrys ice cream when I dont get a six pack after the 3rd day is the trick.

Just eat a bit less and move a bit more.  Repeat.

That’s it.  I know, right, whodathunkit?

Anyways – I kinda maxed out with the waking – was getting to the point where I could walk a 1/2 marathon at max speed and not get into heart rate zone 4 (the productive zone).  So I needed to up the ante.

I’ve always wanted to run but never found a way to do it without getting shin splints.
Until now (kinda – read on) Read More

Routine and results

After a while, the new plan becomes routine.

I’m getting used to exercise and diet.  I actually look forward to my time after work and at weekends to push myself a bit further, a bit faster.   I feel fitter, faster, have more energy

I’ve been watching my diet, walking, running, biking, limping, for 9 weeks now.  And it works.  Its pretty simple really.

Eat less and healthier, burn off calories and turn fat into muscle.

Exercising free time

Perhaps it should be exorcising.  It’s certainly banishing some demons, thats for sure.

So, coming back to my post about free time, it’s been a few months since I started to change the way I use my time by placing restrictions on my computer, device and internet time and things are going really well.

I’m using my time far more effectively, more responsibly and am achieving a lot more for myself and my family.  Read More

Walk around Point Peron

Theres been plenty of photos on this blog of Point Peron, but it’s such a nice place to wander around and has some lovely bays and views down the coast and over Rockingham, that it never gets old.

Anja and I got up early – 7:30am – to beat the heat and go on a photo walk.

Absentee landlord..

Wow – I’ve been really slack on here.  To be honest, I almost forgot about blogging – then you get into a bad habit of not making time for blogging and before you know it, months have passed and no updates .  Or in my case, 6 months.

Oops.

Life has been a bit rinse repeat of late – working hard, still recovering from my leg injury so off the bike and largely confined to the local area.  Not even a chance to go back to England as usual this time due to complications with my leg.

However, I’ve not been a total hermit – heres a sample of what I have been upto.. Read More

Trip to Penguin Island

We’re pretty lucky here in the Southern Hemisphere.  Perth is far away from the world and very beautiful.

The downside is that we have all kinds of wildlife that is out to get us here,  but we also have tiny fairy penguins.  And they live on Penguin Island, only a few hundred metres off the coast near Rockingham, conveniently, only a short drive from my place. Read More

Lightning Strikes

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but we get some awesome storms here in Western Australia.  They are mostly just packed with rain and wind, but from time to time, they come bearing violent electrical goodies.

So when I heard the rumbles of thunder across the ocean, naturally, I went down to check it out.

Cheeky ride out on the DR650

Rewind a month:  (I know, I’m a bit behind – sue me 😉 )

Was a beautiful day, not much wind, not too warm – perfect for getting out on the bike.  I love the variation between the coast and the hills – there’s not too many places where you can get from one extreme to the other so easily. Read More
