Stormville

So, a few hours after having chilled out and watched the sun go down on the beach (in the last post) we got hit by the mother of all storms.

This pic was taken by a local photographer, Grahame Kelaher, about 10km from us to the south, so those lightning strikes were the ones over our head!

We got woken up at 2am by lightning like I’ve never seen before – a strike every second or two and the noise, amplified by the flat surface of the ocean, was unbelievable.

At the beach

Its summer in Perth.  Well, not just here, the whole of the southern hemisphere too, but I only live here – the other places can blog about their own summers.

Anyway, summer.

Its getting pretty warm too, as you’d expect – mid to high 30’s already.  Now last year I had time to go for walks on the beach in the mornings and was working from home a lot and could enjoy it

This year I have a new (and, sorry old company) much more interesting job, but I have to work in the city so don’t get to enjoy the summer as much during the week. I have to endure it during the day and it’s dark when I get home.

More $ but there are always sacrifices.

Well today as I was coming home, I spotted the clouds were just right for a good sunset.

last pics of 2011

First up – I want to wish everyone who comes to this blog my very best for 2012! May it be amazing for all of you.

Ok – here’s the last of the photos from 2011!

The girls wanted to try out their new boogie boards and as the wind was blowing pretty strongly, the ocean was likely to have a few good small children friendly sized waves.

So I packed up my camera and a beach chair and took them down for a few hours.

Photos and Stuff

Yup, it’s one of those random ‘here’s a load of photos’ posts.

Well, I have time off work what do you expect??!!

We’ve had a pretty chilled out week so far, not trying to catch up with friends too much and mostly catching up on family downtime.  We’ve bummed around the house, scoffed picnic food 3 days on the trot (well, why wouldn’t you? – we are talking about brie on crackers with prosciutto and a side helping of tearing bread and olive oil, capsicum fetta and sun dried tomatoes and to top it all – dolmades)

They call it stormy Monday..

Yesterday evening it clouded over and went all grey and dreary. Usually that means that the sunset is nothing special, just a warm glow, often a thin blue line of cloudless horizon for the sun to peak through just before it sets.

Well, last night I thought it was going to do the same, so I stayed in and pottered about a bit.

I kinda got it wrong.

The sunset was spectactular. Read More

Photo Sunday

It’s been too long since I went for a meander with the camera.  I wanted to take some kite surf shots today – it was supposed to be windy with storm, but as it turned out, it was only windy for a few hours and then nothing.

Still as a still thing playing sleeping lions.

And then it got really overcast too.

I really thought I’d blown it and wasn’t going to get to go out at all.

Well, the rain and storms held off a few km out to sea and the sun kept finding a way through.  In fact, the dark/light combination was kind of interesting.

moody and dark

Sunsets.  They’re always good for the soul.

It’s good to gave a colourful close to a day – it’s as if nature is finishing the day with a poetic full stop.

Well, thats all fine and dandy, but the internet (and indeed my own photo collection) is full of shots of sunsets.  They happen every day in millions of different places around the world – they’re almost as common as a Ford Fiesta.

So I decided to do something different Read More

Abstracts

I had a few minutes before dinner the other night, and as the light was lovely, I thought I’d pop to the beach to take a few shots.  Well, I missed the best of it – the sun goes down so fast here – you really have to lie in wait for the golden light, if you see it, you’re already too late.  Ah well.

Anyway, not to waste an opportunity, I used the rapidly descending darkness to take some more abstracts.

Photo Sunday

It’s been a shocker, weather wise, over the last three of four days.  A massive winter storm system has swept in off the Indian Ocean unleashing torrential rain and howling gales (upto 130kmh winds) that have relentlessly battered the Perth coast, with Rockingham copping some of the worst of it.

The bad weather means I’ve not been able to get out to get any air or take any photos.

Mangles Bay

I had a few spare hours yesterday as Jay was writing, so I packed up the camera and headed out to take some shots.  I initially wanted to go to one of the jetties in Rockingham and get some more long exposure shots, but I’ve kinda done that to death for the moment already.

So I wandered over to Mangles Bay, where the boats are moored with the aim to get some boaty/long exposure/moving sky style photos
