moody and dark

Sunsets.  They’re always good for the soul.

It’s good to gave a colourful close to a day – it’s as if nature is finishing the day with a poetic full stop.

Well, thats all fine and dandy, but the internet (and indeed my own photo collection) is full of shots of sunsets.  They happen every day in millions of different places around the world – they’re almost as common as a Ford Fiesta.

So I decided to do something different Read More

West Australian Symphony Orchestra

Sometimes, Perth does unexpected things.  Like having the West Australian Symphony Orchestra play lunchtime mini concerts in the street, shopping malls and office quadrants.

How awesome is that?

Well, as it turns out, very awesome.

Fathers Day

It was, a while ago now, I’m a few weeks behind with my posting, fathers day in Oz.

Jay and the girls wanted to take me for a nice lunch out and a mooch around Kings Park in Perth to look at the spring flowers.  I still get confused.  Having grown up in the UK, the seasons and the months are 180 degrees apart.  As me a snap question – what season is September  – I’ll answer Autumn every time.  Ah well, maybe one of these days I’ll go native.

Kings Park is huge – 1000 acres (4sq km) of botanic gardens and native bushland just outside Perth city centre. It’s on a hill and has amazing views across the Swan River and the sweep of the city, plus it has an extraordinary collection of native wildflowers.

In a couple of weeks, its going to be hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – even the Queen and Pip are coming.

Day trippin’

When I first started work, I spent my time behind computers, ferreting about with wires and cables and generally fixing them.  Then I was allowed to program them, losing myself in lines and lines of code and logic. This sometimes meant I didn’t see daylight, especially when it came to building the semi-supercomputing style systems, sometimes ending up almost inside them before they were ready to run my carefully crafted code.

Nowadays, I spend my working life in front of a computer, designing the systems that some other poor bugger has to ferret around building whilst some other poor bugger has to code from my designs.

I know, I’m almost drunk with power.

good food and wine show

This week The Good Food and Wine show has come to Perth.

Yes, I know.  Culture.  In Perth.  I can hardly believe it either.

Jay got us tickets to go so we could wander around from 10 to 12 before general admission started.  More time for us and the food to get better acquainted before the crowds arrive 🙂

Mangles Bay

I had a few spare hours yesterday as Jay was writing, so I packed up the camera and headed out to take some shots.  I initially wanted to go to one of the jetties in Rockingham and get some more long exposure shots, but I’ve kinda done that to death for the moment already.

So I wandered over to Mangles Bay, where the boats are moored with the aim to get some boaty/long exposure/moving sky style photos

noodling

I took the little LX5 out in Perth today.  Just pointing it at people, things, places – it’s awesome.  It’s fast, small, discrete, lightweight – the perfect little camera for every day.

Weekend

So as you all know by now, it was my birthday and I got an awesome camera.

Well, as tradition has it, I’ve been taking photos left right and centre – wife, children, pets, outside, everything.  Nothing is safe.  I’d do the same with the big cameras too, but it’s more fun with the little sneaky silent one – muhahah!

Its a long weekend for Foundation Day here in Western Australia – yes, 1829 the Swan River colony was founded.

Fremantle

I love Fremantle.  It’s the closest thing to a town with charm here.

For all the beauty and space and cleanliness of Western Australia, its all a bit new, which means that most places near here are modern and somewhat lacking in character. Ok, totally lacking in character.

Perth is the same, most of it is pretty new, and the bits that are older have been somewhat overwhelmed by the modern stuff.  Shame really, I’ve seen some pictures of the city in the 50’s and it had all the charm of Fremantle.

Went for a walk

When the kids go their father’s house every other weekend, Saturday is the ritual lazy morning day.

Jay and I chill on the sofa, have a late breakfast and catch up with each other’s lives.  Well, it’s hard when we’re busy during the week to get a solid block of time to not have to think about other stuff.

Today we decided to go for a little amble down to the foreshore and get morning coffee.
