Last photos from Melbourne I promise

These are general shots of Melbourne people plus the cool street art of Fitzroy, just outside the CBD. Ideally, I’d like to go back there on a sunnier day with more time and just the Holga.

more Melbourne

Well, we had a good time, you should expect photos :p

this episode – details

Melbourne has plenty of nice things to take photos of – I wasn’t really there for that reason as it was supposed to be our honeymoon – but I did manage to get some snapshots of some the little details which give it some of its charm.

Lomo #fail

Regular readers may recall that Jay and I bought a couple of Lomo cameras last year – I got a Diana Mini and Jay got a Supersampler.

Well, as I mentioned, the Diana is shocking – the film hard to load, it gets jammed, the focussing ring is too small and the film strips on rewind. I have a film stuck in there at the moment – it refuses to move forward. Epic #FAIL.

We had similar trouble with the Supersampler – it’s a bugger to load, shredded the film on rewind but redeemed itself with excellent photos. I loaded up another film and took it to Melbourne – I’ll get the shots developed in the week, but I have every confidence they’ll be pretty cool.

It was a shit to get the film out though and a little metal tag thing inside had come away and scratched the film surface – fooook!!!

Then the next film would not load at all. It kept tearing the film no matter what I did.

So both cameras are going to go in the bin. Stupid arse things.

I’m ordering a Superheadz Golden Half next week – hope its better than the Lomo ones!

more of Melbourne

It’s just as well we went there last weekend – this weekend they’ve had torrential rain, golf-ball sized hailstones, wild wind and floods in the city! *eep* The news has been full of pictures of flooded streets and hail-drifts. Bloody hellfire!!

Anyways, just to rub it in for people who are visiting at the moment (and Ellie who lives there), here are some tasty photos – firstly, cityscapes

The first couple of days were a bit dull, so some of the photos are a bit on the grey side. Ah well.

An homage to the missus. Taken with the Holga and (mostly awful) Diana Mini.

Melbourne trip (part 3)

The last day we checked out of the hotel and with luggage safely stashed in the complimentary secure storage (thanks Swanston Hotel) we mooched back to Degraves St for some breakfast.

We pulled in at a really cool little oak-panelled cafe and had a gorgeous cooked breakfast and coffee’s, even though it was disgustingly expensive. But hey, its a holiday, and you have to do these things.

With full bellies, we walked off over St Kilda Rd bridge to the Botanical Gardens. They’re lovely, well maintained and almost deserted. A lovely mooch though the grounds later, we headed to the cafe for some much needed refreshment before heading back to the hotel for our bags and a cab back to the airport.

The airport managed to supply a rather nommy vegan lunch and we were on our way home. Getting back to 42 degrees was a bit much as it had barely topped 20 in Melbourne the whole time were there. Thats Perth for you :))

Had a lovely time, so much more to see for another time, which is exactly how you want to leave a place.

See you again soon, Melbourne.

Melbourne trip (part 2)

We had takeaway and a bottle of wine on Saturday night (well we were both tired and wanted to rest our weary backs), but ended up having a late night anyway.

We were slugs on Sunday morning as it was Jay’s birthday and only made it out in time for an early lunch at The Organic Food and Wine Company

Delicious coffees and vegan pies (dhal for Jay, Mexican bean for me) later we walked off to the National Gallery of Victoria for some culture. It’s a big modern place with a pretty cool collection of art and treasures, from Ming dynasty vases, 4000BC Egyptian tablets and pottery, a smattering of Rembrandts, Picassos, Hockneys, Constables and Turners. We were a bit over the endless rooms of 19th and 20th century European art by the end of it so scooted off back to Degraves St for a coffee and cupcake from the tiny and gorgeous ‘Little Cupcake’ before going back to the hotel for a rest.

We got a late dinner in Nandos (who have a few vegan-able options) then dodged the rain showers back to the hotel for a night of tv and wine ๐Ÿ™‚

More in part 3….

Melbourne trip (part 1)

We’re in Melbourne for a long weekend city break for our honeymoon

It’s not that far from Perth, just under 4 hours by plane, which still makes it an occasional visit, rather than a regular jaunt. We arrived Friday night and went for a wander. We’re staying in Chinatown right in the middle of Melbourne, which is pretty interesting, colourful and lively. We had a fantastic meal at a bustling Thai restaurant, wandered some more, then retired early ready for a day exploring on Saturday.

We started the day with an early birthday present, i got Jay a vintage polaroid camera and a load of film, which i know she’s been hankering after for the longest time.

We then walked off to get Vegan muffins and organic coffee in Degraves St, a gorgeous laneway cafe strip, followed by a wander around the river and southbank. We did some shopping in the lovely laneway malls and cute boutiques then caught a cab to Fitzroy, a bohemian suburb, for some lunch and noodling around the cool shops and cafes.

Had lunch in a fabulous vegetarian restaurant – Jay took a a load of photos too which was cool. We walked back to the hotel via the parliament building and are now chilling out on the bed for a well earned rest!

Good times ๐Ÿ™‚

Open letter to the lady in the Landcruiser

Open Letter Tuesday* (actually, this happened on Monday, but I’m just slack)

Dear lady in the Landcruiser parked next to me in the carpark at the kids school

To the woman in the diesel landcruiser, turn your fricking en... on Twitpic

Thank you so much for leaving your engine running for 40 minutes whilst you waited for your daughter to come out of school. I understand that when its really stinking hot, sitting in a car is not that pleasant and you might want to sit in air conditioned comfort, but as it was only 27 degrees yesterday, that was hardly necessary, I was in perfect comfort in my car with just the window open and the Fremantle Doctor (breeze) blowing in.

But here’s the problem, lady, keeping your car running means that you pump out stinky diesel fumes for me and everyone else, including the children playing tennis just feet from your exhaust pipe and that’s not a very nice thing – for you to think thats ok indicates to me that you’re pretty selfish.

However, giving you the benefit of the doubt, this is a Christian school, its not a very Christian thing to do for me to leap to conclusions so quickly, so I thought maybe you just hadn’t thought things through properly and would give a little embarrassed ‘of course, how thoughtless of me’ comment when I tapped on your window to please ask you to turn off your engine so I and the tennis playing children didn’t choke to death.

However, to blank me as if I wasn’t there was a little odd, so I figure you must be on the phone or something, so I leave it another minute, watching you to see if you were somehow occupied, but no, its obvious that you’re not. So I ask again, with a little rat tap tap on the window. I know you can hear me, its a Landcruiser, not some kind of armour plated Hummer, so why on earth do you just pretend you cant hear or see me?

So, you miserable cow, your initial thoughtless behaviour has turned to plain rude and almost unbelievable. I hope you are happy in your little bubble of ignorance. Maybe you think that a $70,000 car means you don’t have to deal with anyone so obviously less well off as I (although I don’t expect you realise that owning your car on credit is not actually owning it at all)? Maybe you’re just a stuck up cow who doesnt give a shit about anyone else.

I hope, then, Landcruiser lady, that you don’t need the assistance of anyone outside your little air conditioned bubble, because, Christian or not, you might find that people don’t give a crap.

Love and Kisses
Charlie
