The only trouble with the latest batch of films is they are printed on glossy paper. It makes them look beautiful, so sleek, rich and deep, but they pick up fingerprints like a brand new black iPod.
Anyway – I’ve scanned them all in now, Holga and Trip and I have to say, I’m really happy with them. No post processing on them, only on a couple just to correct some slight washing out from the scanner, not to enhance the final result.
The Olympus Trip 35 shots that I was disappointed with initially have scanned from the print really well and come out with a definite vintage feel that I didn’t pick up from the print itself. Maybe its something in the scan process, they look very close to the prints to me, but somehow have picked up a little magic on the way.
The Holga shots were wicked, and I’m finally digging black and white – I might have to buy some more Tri-X and shoot off a load more

The films were an interesting bunch.
The Olympus Trip 35 shots were almost too good. Sharp, clear, well exposed, consistent. So we have a load of pictures that look like good but general snapshots. This was the most arty of them. I’ll scan more this weekend.
The Holga shots were a mixed bag, well, mine were – Jay’s black and whites were brilliant this time. Mine were variable, some were awesome and you’ll get to see them soon I promise. Some were also a bit crap – dark and under exposed due to the film I was using. Velvia 100 really only works in the bright mid-day sun – I have Portra 400VC in it now, which will be perfect for more general conditions.
I also had an old black and white film in the now broken Olympus OM10 and there were a couple of cracking shots in that lot.

Just got a call from the lovely people at Churchill Colour Labs where I get my films developed to tell me that our latest batch are all done.
As luck would have it, I’m in Perth and just around the corner from them today, so I’ll pop over and pick them up.
So, faithful followers, whoever you all are, be prepared for some photos over the next week or so.
I shall drip feed them if I can bear it! Its gorgeously sunny today and I have the Holga again – might be dropping off another film at the same time. I can’t believe I took the one out of my bag from yesterday now! gah!
what to do..

Work has slowed down a bit again, leaving me with time to do some self paced learning, demo creation, reading etc etc. But I’m at a loss as to *what* to focus on.
There are a million things on the go in IT that might be useful to me at any one time, so where do I start?
Google Wave, BPM, TOGAF, SOA, perhaps do some tinkering with .NET?
I don’t know!
On an unrelated note, Roll Up, Roll Up, we’re going to the circus on Saturday. I think the last time I went to a circus was when I was really small, like 5 or something, so that’ll be interesting. Shame I wont be able to take any photos 😦
I’ll take the 35mm films up with us though to get developed – we can do it whilst we have lunch, should get them back before the circus starts 🙂
Trip to York

York is a heritage town in the wheatbelt to the east of Perth. Its a fair old trek from where we live by the sea, so we packed the camera bags and headed out early as its a couple of hours drive through the forest and out into the fields.
On the way we stopped off at a place that makes it own olive oil – run by a charismatic Frenchman – and full of the yummiest locally made honey, tapenade, olive oil, etc. We came away with some bounty (of course) for later. The local scenery is lovely too, with rolling fields and totally unspoiled forest.
York is only a small town with architecture straight out of the wild west, quaint, with verandahs, wrought iron fretwork and the original signwriting on the buildings. Its pretty quiet and cool. We went for a walk about, had some nice lunch and went off for a tour around the old courthouse. Its wonderfully preserved – you walk into the later of the 2 courtrooms, then to the earlier basic courtroom, then the jail cells, which are scarily small and with preserved graffiti on the walls. All the pictures I took of York are on the Holga or Trip 35, so you’ll just have to wait for those 🙂
Went on to the main Catholic church – a very nice traditional building with lovely stained glass windows

Had a very disappointing Devonshire Tea in the somewhat crap Yorky’s Coffee Carriage tea shop, but consoled ourselves with a load of shots with the Holgas and Trip 35’s then came home via Brookton, a scenic detour through the most gorgeous countryside.

so, after yesterday’s post – I have finally finished a 24 shot roll in the Trip 35. I’ll send it and the upteen rolls of 120 film off to be developed on Monday – hell, I might even take them in in person.
Was a busy work day – the car was playing up as the garage somehow stuffed up tightening the new alternator belt – they sorted that quickly whilst I waited, not that they had much choice, I just handed them the keys and plonked myself in the reception with my laptop (had to do some urgent work).
Jay went out getting lots of craft stuff for the kids today, so they had a making stuff afternoon which they really enjoyed – so did I, glad not to have the noise of the Wii in the background whilst I’m trying to work!! .
Took some shots at the beach this afternoon too – I havent done that in ages, so its nice to get some more photos. There’s a really annoying purple fringed spot on my shots with the Nikkor 50mm though – have no idea why, it only seems to be there at f16 and over.
So thats today, I have red wine and I’m going to chill – photos to follow

Still havent managed to finish a film in the Trip 35. I must go out and take more photos with it or I’ll never see what it can do!!
Usage wise – it was a star at Araluen and in Perth when I took it out. Simple, focus and click. And its so light. I think I’ll get some Ilford black and white and take it everywhere.
Still hankering after a Diana Mini 35 though – 1/2 frame 35mm lomo.. *sigh*
If only my car (see the beast below) hadn’t just cost $900 to service. Can I get it serviced cheaper and still maintain the warranty, thats the $million question.

shooting with the Trip

I have the Trip 35 and the Holga with me today as promised and guess what – it was fookin’ cloudy again this morning. Not a problem for the Trip, but the Holga needs sun.
So, I popped out across the road for a coffee with one the guys I work with and took the Trip.
The good thing about Perth is the traffic lights take an age to change and all go in sequence – none of this filtering across traffic to turn right or anything – so its possible to sit in the middle of St Georges Terrace, the main road through the center of Perth and take photos down the middle of the road before the cars start moving again.
So I did. Squatted down and took some snaps looking down the barrel of cars waiting for green a light.
Then, to the horror of the security guards in the courtyard of QV1 – I *gasp* took some photos there too. The guards started closing in, calling on their walkie talkies. I mean, what a liberty, an open space and a camera. I must be a terrorist, dammit, I even have brown eyes and a beard. Its almost certain that I’ll go away and develop the film in my secret lair, studying the picture for the slightest security weaknesses.
Too bad for them then that I just walked off before they could aprehend Perth’s answer to The Jackal.

Every time I’m at the office in Perth I take a good long look at the weather forecast to see if its worth lugging a camera in with me for a few shots at lunch or after work. I’m only shooting with the Holga at the moment and I really love Velvia 100 film, which means it really has to be bright sunshine for any shots.
So far, I’ve managed to bring it in only to see clouds and rain roll in, and leave it at home only to see, as today, the clouds break and the sun come out.
Arse!
I need to find some 400ISO colour 120 film I think. In the summer here it wont be a problem, its always bright sunshine, but in this damp attempt at spring where the weather forecast has been pretty much random compared to what is actually happening outside, Velvia 100 just isnt fast enough.
I’m in again tomorrow, and its looking like its going to be bright sun, I’m bringing the camera no matter what!

In other news, I went out to meet a bunch of photographers from Flickr last night in Kwinana and had a blast.(except when it rained) I didnt take a lot of shots and mostly I’m sure they’re the same as everyone elses, but it was good fun. Good to meet some of the people I’d been chatting to for the last year or so. Or more, in the case of Bruce.
I’ll sort some pics out at the weekend. Have lots of work to do today and tomorrow..
