Summer holiday in England – part 4
Posted on September 5, 2014
The weather was a bit hit and miss, but I found a day that might suit our needs perfectly. It was scheduled to be warm and sunny in the morning and early afternoon, clouding over from the west, with rain in the late afternoon.
So we headed as far East in Kent as you can go (almost) to make the most of the sunshine.
Yup – a day at the beach! Read More

The kids were a bit bored and we were struggling to think of something to do. As I was looking at the map I had an idea. I’d been reading Topsy and Tim books to Henry at night (books I and my sisters had as children) and one of them involved boats and locks and stuff.
The river Medway isn’t too far away and I thought a little walk along in the sunshine would be good. The kids were all ‘oh, Daddy, do we have to, it looks rubbish’ – but sometimes as a parent you have to be firm. So that was it – Ella had the map, we had a 20 minute drive to where I wanted to go and we were off. It was a lovely day but rain was forecast in the late afternoon, so I planned it so we should be back in good time before risking getting wet. Read More

One thing I’ll never tire of is walking around the village where my parents live. The kids were relatively disinterested at first, but they soon got into it and we had a blast walking around, looking at the alpacas in the field (there were there 2 years ago too) and also peering at the posh houses. Hello dear friends!
Apologies for the brief lull in activity – I’m about to make up for lost time, so bear with me.
I’ve been away, back to Blighty, to the Motherland to see my children.
Doesn’t seem that long ago that they were here in Perth with me.
Time flies.

some wisdom

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

It’s cold.
I know – you’re thinking – bah, Australia, cold? Bullshit!
Well I’ve got some news for you – Australia has winter just like everyone else. And sometimes, it’s really not very warm. Like 0 degrees just before sunrise. And possibly single digit daytime temperatures (although, to be fair, in Perth these are mercifully rare). I lot of Northern Hemisphere dwellers are laughing their arses off at this. ‘Thats not cold…’ blah blah.
Well, friends, thats fine, you’re right, but remember we don’t have:
1. insulation
2. central heating
3. double glazing
So even a little cold feels properly cold.
Nightwalking

When the sun goes down, the commuters decamp and make their way back to their burrows, leaving behind them only echoes, shadows, mysterious creatures, dark impenetrable pools and a skyline full of eyes, watching out for the unwary.
Charlene, Flemming and I were on a mission to capture the city as it transitioned from its bright safe sunny side into a dark underworld full of shadows.
Off-road to Mt Solus

There’s an old fire tower on top of a good sized hill deep in the forest near where I live.
It’s been staring at me from google earth for months and I’ve been working my up to riding to it. The forest here being what it is (remote, noone there, no phone signal) I decided to wait until I had company before trying to get to the top on the bike
This is the tale of the ride to the top of Mt Solus.
Some pics I forgot to post – Australia Day 2014

We (the whole family) decided that we wanted to go to the beach on Australia Day and take some photos, run about, journal for a bit, collect shells and other seaside flotsam and generally have a few hours out.
So we all headed out to Point Peron for some R&R Read More
Off-road goodness

So, having just talked myself up on the internet about how badd-ass I’m going to be riding my bike into the inhospitable red centre of Australia, I thought I’d actually take it off road. You mean I haven’t actually been off road on this thing?
Pah, details.
*ahem*
So I fuelled up and headed for the hills.
