My beautiful wife and I decided to go to Fremantle for a) coffee, b) so she could get a septum piercing and c) for lunch
It’s a great place and we go there a lot. 30 mins drive from our house, it’s a proper town (unlike the shopping mall town centres that blight Perth’s suburbs) with a strong focus on food and drink and places to sit and watch the world go by.
It’s also a quirky place fully quirky people.
Including one amazing character, Mr Horatio T Birdbath.
So much street art is cropping up in the Perth area at the moment, which has really improved it’s tired backstreets and laneways.
Here’s the be-dreadlocked missus – told ya Freo was full of quirky people.
Now – back to Mr Birdbath. A local artist has made his mark all over town and we caught the great man at work on one of his expansive murals. These things are astonishingly detailed and painted using Molotow paint pen markers. Even right up close, there is tiny detail. And from further back – a real 3 dimensional feel. The guy is a genius.
Plus there’s the fact that he has a very posh shiny shirt and a bowler hat.
We stopped at San Churros for a coffee and watched the world go by for a bit….
….before wandering off to poke and some shops and get pierced. Not I though, I’m a chickenshit. There was no screaming, I was impressed.
No visit to Freo would be complete without a visit to the old Myer department store which is now home to MANY – a collective of pop-up artisan and local stores. There’s some really cool stuff in here! My childhood toys are back in fashion again! go 1970’s!!
Back outside, lo and behold, more art from the illustrious Mr Birdbath..
Horatio’s work is incredible! You’re totally right: he’s a genius! 😉

Good idea, I guess he has a lot of things to tell.
It must be rewarding to talk to such a figure.

Freo is a bit of a bohemian place, so both art and hairstyle feel quite at home 🙂
